Meet Laura, the newest member of the Dogs Trust Education team

The education team are delighted to announce we have a new member on our team.

Meet Laura, who will be covering the South East for the next few months. Laura will be visiting schools in her district delivering Dogs Trust’s message of Safety Around Dogs. We thought you might like to get to know Laura, so we asked her a few questions for our blog.

Hello Laura. You’re very welcome to the team. Which counties will you be visiting for your workshops?

Hiya! Thank you so much! I’ll be visiting my home county, Carlow, as well as Kilkenny, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford. (Parts of Wicklow and Kildare too. I live close to the Carlow border of both!)

Do you have a dog? And if so, will they be joining the education team too, and coming to schools with you?

Do I WHAT? I have the best dog! His name is Charlie and he’s a whoppin’ 17 years old (105 dog years if my sums are correct). He’s a Jack Russell terrier and he definitely won’t be coming to schools with me. In his old age he’s become quite fearful of children so it just wouldn’t be fair putting him into that environment.

Despite some reservations, Charlie is allowing Laura to visit schools and libraries without him

What’s your favourite breeds of dog?

I’ve grown up with German Shepherds so I have always had a soft spot for them. But I love a total mongrel; you know those pooches where you just couldn’t even begin to guess their breeds? Those! Am I allowed to say that?

What made you want to join the Dogs Trust Education team?

Well there’s the obvious (and cliché) answer which is my borderline obsession with dogs. As well as my passion for working towards a world where animal welfare is the societal norm. I was scrolling Twitter one day, feeling like I was at a stage in my life where craved a new challenge, to explore new roles and learn new skills, when the job popped up on my feed. I clicked in and audibly gasped. “Well this is me in a job description”, I thought to myself. I submitted my CV and cover letter, one two skip a few, now I’m here, feeling incredibly grateful.

What are you most looking forward to as an education and community officer?

Wow what a question; I’m excited to be challenged. I’m one of those people who thrives when I jump into the unknown, so I’m looking forward to seeing how I get on with this brand spanking new role.

How have you found the job so far?

Quite inspiring. The Education team are beyond welcoming and fun and the vibes are truly top-notch. There have already been a couple of challenging questions (children say the darndest things!) but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how lovely, open and engaging the pupils have been. I’m still trying to get to grips with the computers/tech side of things but that will come with time!

Thank you Laura. You're going to do great work in your district.
